California Rural Legal Assistance Inc.

Through a grant from the US Legal Services Corporation, and working closely with the project director of California Rural Legal Assistance Inc. (a nonprofit law firm) we assessed outcomes and challenges of a unique criminal record expungement program assisting criminal defense clients with re-entry. The project goals were two-fold: to provide evidence of its impact while operating in three California counties and to use evidence and insights to help it scale the program with pro-bono lawyers to continuously reach more qualified clients.

Results of our first year assessment led to an additional award of $300,000 to CRLA from the the DOJ Pro Bono Innovation Fund.
