around the page
The left side shows a few filtering tools so you can narrow down and focus your search on things that matter to you.
The center is a default map of all NYC DOE high school programs by the schools where they are located using blue dots. If a school as more than 1 program, you will see a number on the blue dot. Zoom into the dot and those dots will separate so you can click on any/all to see the name of the school AND the name of the individual program.
The right side of the page includes a list of all the schools and programs including some useful information. You can scroll through the list on the page. You can also copy, print or download the list you create according to your filters.
Using the search tools
Start thinking about your child who will be applying to high school. Consider your family’s (parent/adult guardian) priorities. Some basics such as the daily commute from home -how far is too far can help focus your search. School size may be important to your child. Think about the school environment where your child would thrive. Does the school offer extra-curricular or academic courses that interest your child and match their strengths? If English is not your child’s native or first language, would they benefit from a school that offers dual language instruction in their first language? Does your child need a building that is physically accessible?
Creating your custom list
When it’s time to apply, the DOE will ask you to select up to 12 school programs. Some schools have several programs. Each program has its own course of study and application requirements. Private and charter schools are not included in the DOE application! Specialized high schools (including LaGuardia Performing Art) require separate applications.
The search page includes a list of filter options on the far left.
The map shows the location of all high school programs. Each blue dot is a separate program. You can scroll in and click on each blue dot for information. A pop up includes the name of the High School in the top line and other basic details. You can scroll around to find all the programs that fit your criteria.
There are currently 882 high school programs! The list appears on the right side of your screen.
As you add filter your list according to your needs and interests, the list on the right side will change.
Example searches
Say you want to search for school programs that offer studies in veterinary sciences. Entering that term in the top search bar will show you 4 programs -out of the original 882.
Now you want to search all engineering programs. CLEAR your search bar and enter engineering. Click on "Select All" and you will get a list of 158 programs. But you also want schools that offer early college course work for credit. Go to the filter for "other Special programs" and select "early college schools" from the menu. Now your list has 6 program options that you can read about.
A different search for ALL programs for English Language Learners (ELLs) results in a list of 221 programs that appear on the map. Clicking on each blue dot gives information about each school/program including the primary language (other than English) such as Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic, etc.). Let’s say your student is interested in visual arts. Entering “visual arts” in the search bar on the top right, further refines the list to include all ten (10) programs that offer BOTH visual arts curriculum and are geared towards English Language Learners.
Don't forget to Clear Search or Reset All when you want to start a new search.
NOTE: The application will time out after 20 minutes idle. If you disconnect from the server, click on reload with the hand symbol to relaunch the application.
Save, download, print your list of High Schools / programs.
On the far right column where your list appears, notice 3 buttons. These allow you to copy, download or print your list that meets all of the criteria you selected. The list automatically includes the following school information for all select programs: school name, address, website, total students, physical accessibility; graduation rate, sports, diversity goals (if any) and whether or not the specialized test is required. Each selected program includes the following information: program name, unique code, and description, overall interests, AP courses offered, eligibility and admission priorities (such as residency location or continuing 8th graders), and number of 9th grade seats for general education students and students with disabilities (IEPs). Downloading turns your list into an Excel sheet where you can further filter, compare and organize your HS options.
